CloudZero vs watchmy.cloud: what's different?

Last reviewed:

Quick answer: CloudZero is a cost-intelligence platform. It tells you what each customer, feature and team costs, across clouds, and flags anomalies on hourly billing data with alerts up to three times a day. watchmy.cloud does one job: it checks your AWS bill every hour and pings Slack, Jira or SMS when an hour or a day jumps. Platform versus smoke detector.

Both names come up when an engineering team asks "how do I stop the next AWS surprise?". They answer different questions.

What does CloudZero do?

CloudZero is built around unit cost. Cost per customer, per feature, per deployment, per team. It pulls billing data from AWS and other clouds, maps it to your business with its own allocation rules, and shows you where the money goes and why.

Anomaly detection is part of the platform. It is on from the moment you connect, works down to hourly granularity on billing data, and sets its thresholds from your trailing 30-day spend. Global anomalies go to admins by email, up to three times a day. For a specific team or product you enable notifications on a View, and those go to Slack, email or Google Chat. One notification per anomaly, so it does not nag. A newer feature, Monitors, lets you pick the spend to watch and the thresholds that matter, and opens an incident for your team.

CloudZero does not publish how often it ingests billing data. Pricing is by quote.

What does watchmy.cloud do?

One job. Watch the AWS bill. Say something the hour it moves.

You connect one AWS account through a read-only CloudFormation role in about two minutes. We read hourly Cost Explorer data and check it every hour. Two rules run from the first minute: a day 30% above your own 7-day average, and an hour at three times what that hour normally costs. A dial from 1 to 5 tunes both. The alert names the account, the value, the dollars over, and the services behind it. It lands in Slack, Jira, GitHub Issues, email, SMS or a webhook.

No allocation. No unit costs. No Kubernetes. AWS only. One flat fee, 30-day trial, no card.

When is CloudZero the better pick?

When the question is "what does it cost to serve customer X?" or "which team spent what?". When you run more than one cloud. When finance and engineering need the same numbers. That is a platform job, and CloudZero is built for it.

When is watchmy.cloud the better pick?

When the question is "tell me the hour a job runs wild". When you have one to a few AWS accounts and no FinOps team. When you want the alert in the channel you already read, from a read-only role you can audit in one screen, at a price you do not have to ask for.

Can you use both?

Yes. They do not overlap much. CloudZero for the monthly picture and unit economics. watchmy.cloud for the hourly jump. If you already pay for CloudZero and its anomaly alerts reach you fast enough, you do not need us.

How does watchmy.cloud help here?

We read your AWS bill hourly and alert about an hour after a spike shows up in it. How it works is the whole product. Pricing is one number. See the eight options side by side in which tools alert on an AWS cost spike within hours.

FAQ

Does CloudZero alert on AWS cost spikes? Yes. Its anomaly detection runs on billing data at hourly granularity and is on from the moment you connect. Global anomaly alerts go to admins by email up to three times a day. View-level alerts can go to Slack, email or Google Chat.

Is CloudZero free? No. CloudZero does not publish a price list. You request a custom quote.

Does watchmy.cloud do cost allocation or unit costs? No. watchmy.cloud only detects spikes against your own baseline and sends alerts. For cost per customer or per team, you need a platform such as CloudZero or Vantage.

Which one is faster at catching a spike? Both read the AWS bill, which runs 12 to 48 hours behind usage. watchmy.cloud checks every hour and alerts about an hour after the spike lands in the data. CloudZero does not publish its ingestion cadence, so we do not compare.

Do I need to install anything for either? No agents for either. CloudZero needs a billing export and allocation setup. watchmy.cloud needs one read-only CloudFormation role.
