Datadog Cloud Cost Management vs watchmy.cloud: what's different?
Last reviewed:
Quick answer: Datadog Cloud Cost Management puts AWS spend next to your metrics and flags anomalies on the last full day of billing data, usually two to three days back. On the Enterprise tier it also estimates EC2 cost every five minutes. watchmy.cloud reads the whole AWS bill hourly and alerts within about an hour of a spike landing in the data.
If your team already runs Datadog, "do we need another tool for cost alerts?" is a fair question. Here is what each one does, from their docs and ours.
What does Datadog Cloud Cost Management do?
It brings cloud spend into Datadog. Cost next to traces, hosts and containers. Allocation to teams and services through tags. Budgets, forecasts and commitment tracking.
Anomalies are on by default. The model learns your pattern per provider, recognises a spike every Monday as normal, ignores taxes, credits, refunds and Reserved Instance fees, and drops changes under a daily floor of 5 in your currency. The Anomalies tab lists active anomalies from the last full day of cost data, which Datadog's docs put at typically two to three days prior.
Real-Time Costs is the fast layer. It estimates EC2 cost every five minutes from usage reported by the Datadog Agent on each instance, including Kubernetes pods on those instances. It covers EC2 only, not EBS or networking, and it is an Enterprise-tier feature.
Pricing is by spend. Pro is $5 per $1,000 of cloud and SaaS spend a month billed annually, $7.20 on demand. Enterprise is $10 and $15.
What does watchmy.cloud do?
One job. Watch the AWS bill. Say something the hour it moves.
You connect an AWS account through a read-only CloudFormation role in about two minutes. We read hourly Cost Explorer data for every service and check it every hour. Two rules from the first minute: a day 30% above your own 7-day average, and an hour at three times what that hour normally costs. A dial from 1 to 5 tunes both. The alert names the account, the value, the dollars over and the services behind it, in Slack, Jira, GitHub Issues, email, SMS or a webhook.
No agent. No allocation. No dashboards next to your traces. AWS only. One flat fee, 30-day trial, no card.
How do they compare side by side?

Anomaly data | Daily billing data | Hourly Cost Explorer data |
How fresh | Last full day, typically 2 to 3 days back | About 1 hour after the data lands |
Real time | EC2 only, every 5 minutes, Enterprise tier, needs the Agent | No usage-based layer |
Covers | AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle, SaaS | AWS only |
Alert channels | Datadog monitors and notifications | Slack, Jira, GitHub Issues, email, SMS, webhook |
Setup | CCM enabled per account; Agent per instance for real time | One read-only role |
Pricing | $5 per $1,000 of spend a month and up | Flat fee, 30-day trial |
When is Datadog the better pick?
When you already live in Datadog and want cost on the same screen as latency. When your fleet is EC2 and you run the Agent everywhere, Real-Time Costs gets you to minutes for that service. When you need allocation by tag across several clouds.
When is watchmy.cloud the better pick?
When you do not run Datadog, or you run it but its cost anomalies arrive two to three days late for you. When the spend that hurts is not EC2: NAT gateway, data transfer, Lambda, Bedrock. When you want the alert in Slack or Jira from a read-only role, without an agent.
Can you use both?
Yes. Keep Datadog for allocation and for EC2 in real time if you have Enterprise. Add watchmy.cloud for the hourly check on everything else. They read different data and do not fight.
How does watchmy.cloud help here?
We read the bill hourly and alert about an hour after a spike shows up in it. How it works fits on one page. Pricing is one number. The eight options, including Datadog, sit in one table in which tools alert on an AWS cost spike within hours.
FAQ
How fast does Datadog detect an AWS cost anomaly? Datadog's docs say active anomalies come from the last full day of cost data, typically two to three days prior. The exception is Real-Time Costs, which estimates EC2 cost every five minutes on the Enterprise tier.
Does Datadog Real-Time Costs cover all AWS services? No. It covers EC2, including Kubernetes on EC2, and excludes EBS, networking and similar services. It needs the Datadog Agent on each instance.
How much does Datadog Cloud Cost Management cost? Pro is $5 per $1,000 of cloud and SaaS spend a month billed annually, or $7.20 on demand. Enterprise is $10 and $15. Check the Datadog pricing page, it changes.
Does watchmy.cloud need an agent? No. It reads Cost Explorer through a read-only IAM role created by one CloudFormation template. Nothing runs inside your account.
Which one is cheaper? Depends on your spend. Datadog bills per $1,000 of spend. watchmy.cloud is one flat fee for every account you connect. At $20,000 a month of AWS spend, Datadog CCM Pro is $100 a month on an annual plan.
