DoiT Cloud Intelligence vs watchmy.cloud: what's different?

Last reviewed:

Quick answer: DoiT Cloud Intelligence is a multi-cloud cost platform from a cloud reseller. Its anomaly detection reads daily billing data after a 14-day baseline, and on paid plans adds near real-time detection for EC2 and RDS from CloudTrail. watchmy.cloud reads the whole AWS bill hourly, from a read-only role, and alerts about an hour after a spike lands.

DoiT comes up for teams that buy AWS through a reseller or want one console for several clouds. watchmy.cloud comes up for teams that want one alarm. Here is the difference, from their docs and ours.

What does DoiT Cloud Intelligence do?

DoiT is a cloud reseller and partner. Cloud Intelligence is its platform: reports, allocation, budgets, optimisation, Kubernetes and data-platform tooling, across AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and more.

Anomaly detection has two sources. Billing data, such as the AWS Cost and Usage Report, evaluated at SKU level and service level with a time-series model. And real-time usage data: for EC2 and RDS, estimated on-demand cost from CloudTrail events, at hourly granularity, service level only. The real-time path needs an Enhanced or Enterprise plan and CloudTrail logs in an S3 bucket in one of five regions.

The model needs a baseline first: 14 days of billing data, 4 days of real-time data. Nothing is flagged during the baseline. DoiT's own docs say the billing path relies on data that refreshes every 24 hours.

Pricing for the platform is not published.

What does watchmy.cloud do?

One job. Watch the AWS bill. Say something the hour it moves.

You connect an AWS account through a read-only CloudFormation role in about two minutes. We read hourly Cost Explorer data for every service and check it every hour. Two rules from the first minute: a day 30% above your own 7-day average, and an hour at three times what that hour normally costs. A dial from 1 to 5 tunes both. The alert names the account, the value, the dollars over and the services behind it, in Slack, Jira, GitHub Issues, email, SMS or a webhook.

No reseller relationship. No allocation. No Kubernetes. AWS only. One flat fee, 30-day trial, no card.

When is DoiT the better pick?

When you already buy cloud through DoiT, or want to. When you run more than one cloud and want one console. When your runaway spend is EC2 or RDS and you are on a plan with real-time detection.

When is watchmy.cloud the better pick?

When you have one to a few AWS accounts and no reseller. When the spend that hurts is outside EC2 and RDS: NAT gateway, data transfer, Lambda, Bedrock, S3. When you want an alert from day one, in the channel you already read, at a price on the page.

Can you use both?

Yes. DoiT for the platform and the reseller discount. watchmy.cloud for the hourly check on everything. They read different data and do not conflict.

How does watchmy.cloud help here?

We read the bill hourly and alert about an hour after a spike shows up in it. How it works is the whole product. Pricing is one number. DoiT sits in the same table as seven other options in which tools alert on an AWS cost spike within hours.

FAQ

How fast is DoiT anomaly detection on AWS? The billing path reads data that refreshes every 24 hours. The real-time path, for EC2 and RDS only, reads CloudTrail events at hourly granularity and needs an Enhanced or Enterprise plan.

Does DoiT need time before it alerts? Yes. DoiT's docs set a baseline of 14 days of billing data and 4 days of real-time data. No spend is flagged as an anomaly during the baseline.

Do I have to buy AWS through DoiT to use Cloud Intelligence? DoiT is a reseller, and Cloud Intelligence is its platform. Check with DoiT what the platform costs on its own. Its price is not published.

Does watchmy.cloud cover services other than EC2? Yes. It reads Cost Explorer for every service in the account, hourly. NAT gateway, data transfer, Lambda, Bedrock and S3 count the same as EC2.

Which one is simpler to set up? watchmy.cloud is one CloudFormation template that creates a read-only role. DoiT's real-time detection needs CloudTrail logs in an S3 bucket in one of five supported regions, plus the billing export.
